Ohio Nurses Association Names New President and Executive Director

Columbus, Ohio – November 7, 2023 – The Ohio Nurses Association (ONA), a recognized leader and advocate for Ohio nurses, has named Rick Lucas BSN, RN, CCRN as its new President and Executive Director.

As a dedicated and experienced member of ONA with over 20 years of nursing experience, Mr. Lucas has brought a wealth of knowledge and passion to his roles. He has been a dynamic force within ONA, serving as President of the Ohio State University Nurses Organization (OSUNO), for five years, where he was at the forefront of advocating and negotiating for safe minimum staffing standards, end to mandatory overtime, and championing a just culture, all in the best interest of both nurses and patients at Ohio State. “I am confident that my strategic vision, determination, and advocacy skills will enable me to lead the ONA with integrity and purpose, said Rick Lucas, Ohio Nurses Association President and Executive Director. “By working together, we can continue to elevate the nursing profession, champion our rights, and create an environment where every nurse and health professional can thrive.”

As part of his roles, Mr. Lucas is leading ONA’s CODE RED, the multifaceted, multiyear campaign that focuses on the issue of understaffing and workplace violence in Ohio’s hospitals. In September 2023, ONA and Ohio Representatives Haraz Ghanbari (R-Perrysburg) and Elgin Rogers, Jr. (D-Toledo) announced the Nurse Workforce & Safe Patient Care Act (House Bill 285).

Mr. Lucas’ new position as Executive Director was effective on November 1, 2023.
