ONA is proud to engage in the electoral process to support candidates who are committed to protecting patients, strengthening the healthcare workforce, and advancing policies that reflect the values and priorities of nurses and health professionals across Ohio.
Why ONA Endorsements matter.
ONA represents tens of thousands of nurses and health professionals who serve communities in every corner of Ohio. Our endorsement signals to voters that a candidate has a strong understanding of healthcare policy and a willingness to partner with frontline professionals to improve patient safety, workplace conditions, and access to quality care.
ONA endorses candidates based on their policies—not their party affiliation.
The ONA Endorsement Process
ONA evaluates candidates through a structured, transparent process to assess their alignment with our policy priorities and commitment to healthcare workers and patients.
1. Candidate Questionnaire
In order to be considered for an ONA endorsement, candidates complete a detailed policy survey. The questionnaire evaluates candidate positions on key issues, including:
- Safe staffing and workforce sustainability
- Workplace violence prevention and safety
- Professional autonomy and licensure protections
- Access to affordable, high-quality healthcare
- Public health and community well-being
Responses are reviewed for depth, consistency, and alignment with ONA’s adopted policy platform.
2. Panel Interview
Select candidates may be invited to participate in a panel interview with ONA members and leaders. The interview provides an opportunity to:
- Expand on survey responses
- Discuss healthcare priorities in greater detail
- Engage directly with nurses and health professionals about the real-world impact of policy decisions
3. Recommendation and endorsement
Based on survey responses, interviews, and alignment with ONA’s policy priorities, endorsement recommendations are made based upon ONA’s established governance process.
