Hillside Closure Chaos: Insight Health’s Disastrous Shutdown Leaves Patients and Workers in Crisis

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 28, 2025

Warren, Ohio –– As of 8:45 PM yesterday, Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital was emptied—its last patient discharged, its doors effectively closed. Yet, the dedicated healthcare professionals who have served this community with skill and compassion are being met with silence, confusion, and blatant disregard from Insight Health.

Our members have received no formal layoff notices, no clear direction about their employment status, and no communication from Insight. Instead, they are left scrambling for answers—learning critical information through news reports and speculation rather than from their employer. Adding to the chaos, payroll was not processed on time today, and Insight has yet to address or explain the delay.

“Insight has had every opportunity to handle this transition responsibly, but instead, they’ve abandoned patients and healthcare workers alike,” said De Anna Fuchilla, Chair of the Hillside Local Unit of the Ohio Nurses Association, AFT. “This hospital is a lifeline for our community, and its closure is devastating. Workers deserve answers, and patients deserve better than being rushed out the door.”

The Ohio Nurses Association (ONA) is demanding that Insight Health follow our collective bargaining agreement (CBA), provide healthcare coverage, severance, and the respect our members have earned.

“This isn’t just about our members—it’s about the entire community,” said Rick Lucas, RN, President of the Ohio Nurses Association, AFT. “Patients are losing access to essential care, and healthcare workers are being tossed with no plan. We expect Insight to do the right thing and meet their obligations, and we won’t stop fighting until they do.”

How Will Insight Health Restore Trust?

This closure raises urgent questions about Insight Health’s ability to responsibly manage healthcare facilities. While Insight Health continues to operate hospitals in Flint, Michigan and Chicago, Illinois, it has shuttered Hillside and Trumbull Regional Medical Center in Ohio—leaving workers and patients stranded.

If Insight Health expects to continue doing business in this region, it must explain how it plans to restore trust with patients, the community, and the workforce after this chaotic, veiled debacle. Right now, all we see is instability and a company unwilling to be transparent about its future.

Our Demands:

  • Immediate written layoff notices and confirmation that employees will be paid during the notice period.
  • Timely and full payroll processing—workers cannot afford to be left without their earned wages.
  • Healthcare coverage for all employees during the layoff period.
  • Immediate bargaining with ONA over the impact of these layoffs—Insight has our proposal and has yet to respond.
  • A clear, public commitment to reopening Hillside and Trumbull as soon as possible, with a concrete plan to restore services.
  • A full explanation of how Insight intends to regain the trust of the community, patients, and the workforce they just abandoned.

The ONA stands with the workers and patients of Hillside, and we will not stop until they get the justice they deserve.
