Ask Nurse Jesse: CE Waiver

Anonymous Nurse: I am an RN and retiring at the end of this year. I’m not sure if I want to keep my license up and have always completed my contact hours to renew my license every 2 years, but have not done any for the 2021 year. Is it correct that there is a one-time exception to the CE requirements for licensure renewal?

Nurse Jesse:

According to Ohio Administrative Code 4723-14-03(G):

(G) A licensed practical nurse or registered nurse may use a waiver to satisfy the continuing education requirement for one renewal period only if the nurse notifies the board in writing requesting the waiver. Once a nurse notifies the board of the intent to use the waiver, the board will not accept a withdrawal of the request.

This waiver may only be used one time. Also, if you decide to renew your license, you would have until October 31, 2021 to complete the CE requirements. When you submit your renewal application, you only need to attest that you have completed or will complete the required CE by the 10/31 date, so you have a little bit of time should you decide to take the CE instead of using the waiver.
