Nurses and Educators Unite to Keep Schools, Hospitals, and Universities Safe

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Nurses, health professionals, educators, and paraprofessionals across Ohio will hold a press conference as part of the AFT National Day of Action, calling on lawmakers to reject legislation that would make public schools, hospitals, and universities less safe by opening them to immigration enforcement actions.

Members of the Ohio Nurses Association (ONA), Ohio Federation of Teachers (OFT), Registered Nurse Association (RNA), Faculty Alliance of Miami (FAM), Cincinnati Federation of Teachers (CFT), and American Association of University Professors – University of Cincinnati Chapter (AAUP-UC) are raising concerns about legislation introduced in the Ohio House that would expand immigration enforcement access to public institutions — including schools, hospitals, colleges, and universities.

Frontline nurses and educators will speak about how these proposals would:

  • Create fear among patients, students, and families
  • Discourage individuals from seeking medical care or attending school
  • Undermine trust in essential public institutions
  • Ultimately make communities less safe

Hospitals must remain places where patients feel safe seeking care and healthcare professionals can focus on saving lives, and that schools and universities must remain safe spaces for learning and opportunity.

Nurses and educators are standing together because safety in our schools, hospitals, and universities is non-negotiable. These institutions exist to care for our communities and educate our future — not to serve as sites for immigration enforcement.
